I’ve been fascinated with all sorts of vinyl record animations during the creation of the “Kinora” album. The album concept is centered around animated pictures put to music; taking inspiration from simple animated toys such as the phenakistiscope or praxinoscope. Of course, the Kinora itself was a mechanism for creating animated pictures as well.
In the late 1950s, the Red Raven Magic Mirror animated record series used a mirror to reflect image from the vinyl records to create moving animations for children. To go further back in history, artist and sculptor Marcel Duchamp was one of the first to experiment with spinning animated designs.
